A conversation about the vision behind Engel Ayurpura.
With Engel Ayurpura, Carmen Kohler has created the first authentic Ayurveda retreat in the Dolomites and throughout Italy – a place where Ayurveda is not only practiced, but thoughtfully reinterpreted. Here, it is not about strict rules, but about lightness and a return to oneself. How did this vision come to life?
From Vision to Reality
Mrs. Kohler, Ayurveda originates in India – what inspired you to bring it to the Dolomites?
For me, Ayurveda is a science of life. It guides us back to ourselves and reconnects us with what truly matters. And where could one come closer to that essence than in a place where one feels deeply connected to oneself? For me, that place is nature – the mountains of the Dolomites. They radiate a strength that grounds you and, at the same time, inspires you. Of course, it was not only a personal fascination, but also a conscious decision. I realized that we are responsible for our own health – and that it is worth caring for it proactively. That realization became the foundation of Engel Ayurpura.
Were there challenges along the way?
Certainly. One of the greatest challenges was convincing my family of this concept. Ayurveda was initially something unfamiliar to them – as it is for many people here. I wanted to show that it is not merely a healing tradition from a distant culture, but a philosophy that can be lived anywhere in the world.
Another important question was: with whom do I walk this path? Engel Ayurpura was never meant to be just a place, but an attitude, a way of being. It was essential to find the right people who shared this vision. Today, I am deeply grateful that we have a team who carries this philosophy and lives it wholeheartedly.
A Place of Comfort and Stillness
What was most important to you in shaping Engel Ayurpura?
I wanted to create a place that feels different – a place of silence and comfort. Here, one should feel cared for, surrounded by the powerful nature of the Dolomites. But it was not only about atmosphere; authenticity was equally important. Ayurveda is not a trend, but an ancient healing tradition thousands of years old. It deserves to be practiced with respect and integrity.
If you had to describe Engel Ayurpura in a single word, what would it be?
Sanctuary.
Ayurveda & Lightness
A New Approach
Many people associate Ayurveda with strict rules and renunciation. Engel Ayurpura represents a lighter, more contemporary interpretation.
What does that mean in practice?
There are no strict rules here – because strictness has nothing to do with lightness. Ayurveda is not a rigid system to be followed; it is an opportunity to live more consciously. For me, lightness means guiding people gently, not forcing them into a framework. I want to show that values such as acceptance, tolerance, and mindful moderation do not complicate life – they enrich it.
How is this sense of lightness experienced within the hotel itself?
Everything we do is shaped by this principle. The architecture is clear and calm, never distracting. The colors are soft, the materials warm and natural. Our team also embodies this attitude – through a gentle touch during a treatment, a sincere smile, or a heartfelt welcome. It is these details that truly make the difference.
The Power of the Dolomites
And Their Influence on Wellbeing
You have mentioned nature as a source of inspiration. What role do the Dolomites play in Engel Ayurpura?
When you walk in the mountains and allow their vastness to unfold before you, you feel a deep strength. This is the same strength that an Ayurvedic retreat can awaken: those who commit to the process often discover a renewed mental and physical resilience.
Was this also the reason for the house’s minimalist design?
Yes. A clear and calm design does not distract – and that is essential during an Ayurvedic retreat. Guests should be able to focus on themselves, to become aware of their own body, without the environment demanding attention.
Is there a place within the hotel that holds special energy for you personally?
Yes, two places. When entering the reception area, the view opens directly toward the natural landscape – it creates a certain energy, an invitation to connect immediately with the surroundings. The second place is our Yoga Shala. There is a deep, meditative atmosphere there. Many guests say they feel instantly at home. And that, for me, is Engel Ayurpura: a place where one arrives within oneself.
The Future of Engel Ayurpura
Are there new concepts you would like to implement in the future?
Yes, we would like to integrate mindfulness even more deeply. We are already working on a new concept – but for now, it remains a small secret.
Gratitude & Inspiration
What has shaped you most on this journey?
Every day, I am reminded of how fortunate we are. We have so many opportunities to shape our own lives, and yet we often forget that. I have learned that it is not about bending to meet others’ expectations. Each person should follow their own path and leave their own trace.
If you could leave your guests with one single message, what would it be?
“Be kind to yourself. Do not dwell on the past or look too far into the future – live in the present. And above all: follow your heart.”
